Welcome to 2019!

It’s that time of year when we all see hundreds of posts about goals and new year resolutions.

And with good reason! The start of a new year is the perfect time to reflect and plan. But we all know that so many of our good intentions remain just that – intentions that are never actioned. Then when you look back at the end of the year, it can be depressing to see that your goals became just another to-do on the humungous to-do list that never got done!

So, I’m going to suggest a different approach.

Word up!

In January each year we hold a special SmartWomen Connect Member’s Vision Board Session. It’s a fun evening where we get crafty and visual and create bold plans for the year ahead that we can look at every day to spur us on.

The most important part of the process is choosing a theme for the year which is represented by one word. Your word will guide you in creating goals, making decisions and holding you accountable to the growth you want for the year ahead.

It’s kind of like your goal-setting guardian angel, watching over you, guiding you in the right direction when you inevitably steer a bit off track.

Wondering how you come up with your word? Grab a notebook and pen and start pondering and writing.

Here are some ideas of how to get that word out of your head and into your life.

Look back at the year before

What did you learn? What worked and what didn’t? What goals did you achieve? What goals went amiss? How did you feel at the end of the year about your work, relationships, health, mental wellbeing and overall joy and happiness?

Look forward to a year from now

Project forward 12 months from now. What answers do you want to be giving to the questions above? How do you want to feel about 2019 and what you have achieved? What emotions come up when you think about that?

Behave Yourself!

Our level of achievement and more importantly how we feel about our progress is a direct result of our attitude and the behaviour we choose to engage in. So, knowing what emotions you want to feel at the end of the year, ask yourself: “Who do I need to be, to make that happen?” What positive behaviours do you need to embrace to support your goals?

Look for themes

What do you notice about the words and thoughts you are writing down? When you look at the things you want to achieve and how you want to feel, is there a common connection?

Choose a word

Take the common theme and condense it into a word. It needs to be big enough to encapsulate big dreams, and realistic enough to ensure it will indeed get you back on track when needed.

Here’s one we prepared earlier…

Clear as mud?! Here’s my word and some behind-the-scenes thinking on how it came to be

Reflecting on 2018 I was happy with my progress in most areas of my life, yet looking overall at the year I felt some of my decisions and behaviours had not set me up for success. My feeling at the end of the year was that it had flown by, and I had lurched from one month, week and day to the next, barely stopping to breathe.

I had put on weight (quite a lot), hadn’t exercised as much as I wanted to, and felt I hadn’t made the most of my spare time.

Looking forward to the end of 2019, I decided I want to feel energised rather than exhausted. I want my decisions to have been deliberate, and I want to look back and see that I have been consistent in my actions – in business, health, family time and personal care.

The common theme running through all of this was consistency.

But consistent didn’t quite feel big enough. Most of all I wanted to be sure that my actions also positively impact others around me. I want to be conscious and on purpose…

And that’s how my word for 2019 “PURPOSEFUL” was born.

You’ve got the last word!

Like our SmartWomen members with their Vision Boards, you’ve got a blank canvas in front of you for 2019. What will you create? t’s time to dream of what you want, then create a plan to make the dreams reality.

What are your dreams and plans for 2019 and what word will sustain those dreams and plans? I’d love to hear from you. Email me with your word when you have it!
